Car-nal

By Jeremy D. Joy

“For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be. So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God” (Romans 8:5-8).

To live according to the flesh is to be enslaved to our carnal desires. The flesh is a good servant, but not a good master. It is hard to elevate ourselves above the flesh because we live in a culture that pushes pleasure including food, sex, and vanity. The carnal is killing us! We need to feed the inner man with the word of God, prayer, worship, and fellowship with other Christians and cut off the feeder systems that supply carnality. We can enjoy the things of the world, if they are not contrary to the will of God, but we must not let them become our idols.
