Ed-i-fy

By Jeremy D. Joy

“Therefore let us pursue the things which make for peace and the things by which one may edify another” (Romans 14:19 NKJV).

We are constantly under construction as the people of God being renovated into what God wants us to be. However, the process requires more than what we can supply ourselves; we also need one another. To “edify” literally means “to build the house” and the Bible uses it in reference to our spiritual house which is in desperate need of an extreme home makeover (Romans 12:1-2). When a house is built or remodeled, materials are added that were not in the house originally. Craftsmen use a blueprint and apply their knowledge and skills until the structure is complete. We must use our abilities to improve our spiritual lives according to the word of God, but other Christians can edify us through their teaching, example, and gifts resulting in a permanent addition to our house that God can inhabit (1 Corinthians 3:16-17).
